According to the Pew Internet & American
Life Project, fewer than one in seven Americans were online
in 1995.... Today, Pew says, two out of every three Americans
spend time online. —CNN.com, The
Internet Transforms Modern Life
A business that does not have at least a "Business Card" website
is going to find itself falling far behind the amount of business
it could be doing with a well-designed website. One customer
who finds you on the Internet and purchases from your business—or
perhaps a few, depending on the amount they buy —can
mean your website pays for itself.
When
a person moves from one area of the country to another these
days, the first place they look for realtors, neighborhood
advice, school system ratings, and other useful information and
businesses, is on the Internet. If your business doesn't have
a website, you're going to miss out.
The Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce
announced Quarterly Retail E-commerce Sales for the 4th quarter
of 2006 adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day
differences, but not for price changes, was $29.3 billion,
an increase of 6.3 percent (±2.8%) from the third quarter of 2006.
(This
is well up from the seasonal sales from the 4th quarter of
2004, which we noted a couple of years ago was was $18.4
billion.... Total e-commerce sales for 2004 were estimated
at $69.2 billion.
)
Total retail sales for the fourth quarter of 2006 were estimated
at $990.8 billion. — United
States Department of Commerce News; February 16, 2007
With this kind of phenomenal growth, any retailer who does not maintain a presence
online is going to end up losing out to those who do. As a side note, the estimate
for 4th quarter sales in 1999, the first time it was estimated by the U.S. Department
of Commerce, was about $6.2 billion.
So how do you choose a Web Design Company ?
First and foremost, find a designer with whom you get along. You're going
to spend a lot of time working with this person, you'd better feel comfortable
with them. Make sure they have experience—ask to see their portfolio, then
ask for references and check them out. Make sure their style fits with your vision
of what you want your site to be, and also make sure they review your site in
multiple browsers, not just Internet Explorer. Check that the sites they've done
load quickly. Most visitors to a site will not wait for it to load more than
a few seconds, and that's on a slow dial-up connection!.
Spend a little time with the designer asking questions, then go home and check
out their answers on the Internet to make sure they are in line.
Would
you hire a child to build your home?
Of course not! Yet your website can be a crucial part of your business,
even the larger part of your business, and still many small companies
will trust their website design to an amateur web designer with little
or no experience. Just because someone taught themselves some HTML
and can put together a basic web page, it doesn't mean they understand
corporate identity or know search engine requirements, linking strategies,
web standards, marketing strategies, business objectives, or the
many other pieces of knowledge are so important in designing a good
website.
Was your website marketing campaign
designed by the "Little Piggies"?
This little Piggy went to market, this
little Piggy stayed home....
unfortunately your website marketing may have been designed by the
little piggy that went "wee, wee, wee" all the way home
with YOUR money and left your site "lost in cyberspace",
where no one can find it. If your web site was designed by
someone who thinks they know websites,
but who is actually clueless when it comes to designing a site, you
may as well have given your money to the little Piggy. Your site
should be designed for doing what you want it to do: SELL YOUR PRODUCT.
How experienced
is YOUR designer?
The web has only been used commercially for roughly 10 years. Many
web designers, and we would venture to say most web
designers, have only been designing the last 3-4 years. Toner Design
has been in business designing websites since 1997, with over
10 years of experience and a longevity in the web design profession.
We ran an online bulletin board service from 1993-1996, and have
personally been online since 1990, so we understand "online" better
than most. We have worked with many companies, from companies of
"one" to those with international branches, and understand
the needs each of those kinds of companies has. We are constantly
re-educating in order to not only stay up-to-date with new concepts
on the web, but also marketing and business. We take our business
seriously.
Oh where, oh where has my web designer gone?...
Too
often we have heard stories about web designers who have gone
missing with a site half-designed, leaving a site and domain in limbo.
We have rescued such sites on a number of occasions, a feat which
requires experience with registrars as well as dealing with moving
a site and making it operational again. With 9 plus years behind
us in business in the Hendersonville/ Brevard/ Asheville area, we
have the experience and longevity that should be one of your first
requirements.
LOST in website gibberish?
Are you hoping someone will finally explain what you need to know in
terms you can understand?
We have been "translating" web design for years and can explain how
it all works IN PLAIN ENGLISH. Too often those proficient in web design do not,
or are unable to, speak in terms that the average user can understand despite
claims to the contrary. WE CAN. We know that most business owners are too busy
running their business to spend time playing around with technical terms. They
don't have time to sort through the "mysteries" of
web design, and don't want to have to listen to someone spouting technical jargon
that leaves them with eyes glazed over. We'll explain as much
as you want to hear, so that you understand what your choices really are.
Want more than
web design?
We can handle every portion of your corporate identity package, from
digital (web) to hard copy (e.g., brochures and business cards),
saving you time and effort in finding just the right company for
each of these services. Because we have worked in the print industry and the
Web industry for years and understand both better than many, we are
far better able to provide just what you need, when you need it.

I just want to thank you for all the work you've done with our website. Not being much of a "computer person", I really appreciate how easy you made it for me to make changes, write emails and market to our customers. If I'm ever in a position to need a website again, you'll be the first person I call.
